Will the next Jazz appear in Japan and Europe before we get a new Fit in North America?

Based on the competition, what can we expect the next Fit to have? Will it be bigger or have two engine options in N.A.?

My guess is that it won't be much changed from the current Fit/Jazz model. It may get an improved rear suspension to improve ride quality and likely an Earth Dreams Technology 1.5-liter engine rated at just over 120 bhp and for the first time, a CVT automatic.

1st gen Jazz was with CVT.
You missed nothing with it, it was unreliable.

Actually, well over 90% of all Fits sold in Japan are CVT, Honda sells about 200k/year (must now be nearing 1Million on the road of gen2), and they are all pretty much bullet proof.

I never tried the gen1, so I don't know about it, also wonder if European driving habits (if I remember it right you are from Europe) put too much strain on CVTs (Americans and Japanese drive much more smoothly), but for sure I think anyone driving automatic transmissions is missing a big deal by not getting these CVTs ("Amazing CVT !" on TOV). Now Jeff said the ED ones are even better, can't wait to try one of those !

PS: I'm not sure the US bound Fit will get a CVT ... Mexico built ones may stay with a 5AT or similar, keep the CVTs for Accord class, next Civic, and hybrids.

So I'm thinking it will be 5AT and 5MT with an E.D. engine. Thus a 5% fuel economy increase.

Marketing that describes it as roomier and better riding suspension, but neither is actually noticeable.

Styling that continues it's shape and doesn't make it boring, so a bit polarizing or "edgie", but not cute like a Mini, etc.

Ideal would be:
More compliant ride, 130 hp 1.5 liter E.D. engine with more torque, CVT and 6MT, and a little more rear seat legroom (for rear facing child seats).

I'd like it to essentially accomplish the Civic wagon we'd like to see.

It would also be nice to see an expansion of trim levels on the Fit. Maybe something like LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L. The EX and above could have automatic climate control and the beautiful glass roof of the Jazz.

I'd like to see the features, but then get ready for a $25k Fit.
Obviously, a Fit Si should be available.

I think in the end, the next-generation models based on the Global Small Car platform (Fit/Jazz, City sedan, Freed wagon and Airwave wagon) will be not much different than the current model even in terms of styling, but I expect the following changes:

1. Honda will re-engineer the rear suspension setup to improve the ride quality.

2. We may see some changes to the front instrument panel.

3. It will DEFINITELY see a new drivetrain, a new 1.5-liter I-4 based on Earth Dreams Technology rated at 125-130 bhp and for the first time in the US market, a CVT automatic (though the CVT will be based on the new design coming this fall for the Honda Accord). The result is a probably 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway with the CVT based on the EPA 2008 test.

I think your predictions are spot on. The full i-MID system found on the CR-V, Civic, and 2013 Accord will also definitely be found on the new Fit/Jazz. As for specific technologies, I really hope Bluetooth is standard on all trims. I don't think we'll see a backup camera since it's such a small car anyway.

Somehow, I don't see horsepower to jump from 117 to 125-130, like you predict. The way Honda has been behaving, I'll bet the farm it will be something like 118.

Yes, Honda definitely needs to improve the ride quality! We have some pretty poor roads here in Cali and your fillings will fall out driving the Fit. Wonder if they'll put liquid filled bushings on the rear suspension of the next gen Fit/Jazz just like they did to dramatically improve the ride quality of the 2012 9th-gen Euro Civic hatchback?

Given what we know about Earth Dreams Technology for the 1.5-liter I-4 engine, I expect an increase of power from 117 to 122-125 bhp, but with better fuel economy. That combined with the new CVT means stronger acceleration, too. In short, unlike the current model, the new Fit will be better for the stronger acceleration desired by American drivers.

I wish we could get a version of the Fit Shuttle Hybrid. That car is so pretty, and it looks very roomy while still being economical and nimble.

Honda is planning to launch a compact crossover version of the Jazz. Well placed sources have told Japanese analysts that the model will be targeted primarily at Europe and the US, and it is hoped up to 400,000 units per year could be produced.

Thanks for the picture of that drivetrain! :-)

You will likely see this engine on the 2014 Honda Fit, probably the first model year of the third-generation model. It will be very interesting to see if Honda has figured out how to do a better rear suspension without sacrificing the amazing amount of interior space the current model now has.

Trees need CO2 to grow and the reduction in CO2 output on new Honda engines stunts their growth, hence the small tree.
