Perfect commuter, good mileage, fun to drive, reasonable insurance, great price.

2012 Civic EX Navi AT5. Polished Metal Metallic... usual stuff.. fog lights, all weather mats, trunk tray, trunk net....

Waiting to hear on the CRV....

Next up.. we're thinking either 2012 CRV EX-L AWD or TSX Wagon Tech.

CRV will likely be white? No thoughts on the TSX.. as usual I want it red. ;-)

Cool. Nice color choice.
And like the CR-V in white - get that rear wing if you can to get some nice rearward extension/projection off the roofline. OK!

Wow... You weren't kidding about the wing.. huh? I thought you were.... it does look nice.

Now, I wonder why the roof cross bar for the CRV are 230 bucks but 400 for the TSX....

Sure thing! I may have first seen it "live" on the new Euro CR-V (and bigger wheels, too) and it did wonders back there. Shades of "R" even...

It would really set the vehicle off:

Guess YES....

Note that since we need a wagon we are forced to look at vehicles north of $30K. The CRV is north of $32K, the TSX is $35K. Sales tax in California (LA County) is 8.75% which pops in an additional 2800 for the CRV ($35K) and $3000 for the TSX ($38K)... Then you got to add registration, $300/$328.

So they're both far into the $30K range.. the TSX in particular is right almost at $40K!!!

For our wagon I'd much prefer something topping at $25K. That'd make it total just under $28K.

The Civic EX AT5 with NAVI as spec'd by us tops at $23,600 which puts it right in the mid $25Ks.

So, for the time being we have to byte the bullet.

Perfect commuter? Yes.

Fun to drive? Not so much. That 5AT takes what little fun there is out of the R18. It's not a bad trans in this segment, but fun it is not.

What you've bought is a vehicle that you can completely ignore on the drive to work. That's actually very appealing to a lot of people so as a car selling proposition, that's cool. But fun? Nope.

Dios Mio... can you ever have fun on the 405 during rush hour?

My wife recounted how one evening, driving on the car pool lane she kept passing (and being passed) by some guy in a fire breathing Lamborghini. Eventually she left him way behind.

I stand what I said... often it's much more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Particularly when driving fast is simply out of the question.

The problem, you see, is that Gov. is quickly taking the FUN out of driving.. And some automakers are gleefully going along..

Very good choice, Tony! I have a 2012 Civic EX sedan that I bought on January 21st and it now has 3,500 miles on it. It's a very good car and my ownership experience has been quite positive so far. I'm currently averaging 34.5 mpg between both city and hwy driving. On the highway I've got as high as 46 mpg. My previous car was a 2009 Civic LX sedan that I had purchased brand new in Nov 2008. I traded it in for the new 2012 Civic EX. I think you'll be happy with your new Civic. Congrats!

Heck... the CRV felt like sport car and the Fit like an F1.

What can I say.. the Hybrid keeps me from getting tickets, though. The one time I came close (someone cut me off then slowed down so I went around him and passed him -a little closely-. The CHP saw me but not him (as usual).... So the sergeant drove up next to me and gave me a no! no! don't do that again sign... and drove off.

In any other car I'd gotten the ticket but in the hybrid he figured I was driving at the limit ( I sort of was...).

I think Shawn needs a dose of Hybrid Reality.. The drive to Vegas is a killer nowadays.

Yes, and all of that is because thousands of people die in car accidents every single year, and often because of people who drive like assholes.

Also, buying the 2012 Civic right before the newly revised model shows up this fall seems like an obvious mistake.

Doing it 2-3 times/month now. They know my face at Bally's (always get a smoking deal there - can't beat Strip rates mid-week - and they upgrade me to a suite about 80% of the time).

Averaging almost 28 mpg in the G37 both ways if there aren't any major cross/head winds. Cruise control at 80 mph and just mind my own business. CHP won't bother you unless you're well above 80. I even got lit up by laser coming down the Cajon pass at 81 mph last weekend and he didn't even flash a light at me to warn me to slow down.

Now, NHP is getting testy lately. Used to be I'd speed up at the border going to LV, now I slow down.

Yes... on cruise control, on a flat road you can get amazing speeds if you can keep the engine/drivetrain in the sweet spot and not reach WOT for the power too often. The hybrid goes wonderful at 80 on cruise control... getting 40+ at 80 on the I5 along Camp Pendleton all day long.

What speeds are cool in NV nowadays? Traffic into LV is heavy now..

Anyhow... NV... Post Christmas we came down fron LV via Searchligh (US95.. don't miss the right turn before Boulder City.. I did... brother in law went Washingtonian on me!!! ) to the I40 and I10 back way to Palm Springs....

My brother in law was cruising at 80 all the way.. but we were in his F150 crew cab with Washington plates.. ;-)

BTW... that beast is a great cruiser on the long straights... a bit busy when the road get curvy though.

Never stayed at Bally's.... maybe next time my wife and I will go by ourselves and enjoy it. No kids, no family... ;-)

(However... my mother is a darn winner! All that indian casino training paid off in LV.. she made almost a thousand bucks gambling dime machines in LV and the Cal Lottery.. in four days!)

Well, up to what Shawn wanted to input his data on TOV Real World FE database, he had averaged 19mpg on about 5k miles so ... for sure he is not getting HCH mileage on the G37 ...

It'd be nice if you added your data on your HCH or your new Civic to the list Tony, then we could speak out of the real stuff. Jeff just sent me a few days ago his info for his brand new Acura (sorry I did not answer but I was in Korea on holidays), looking forward to see how it "performs".

PS: Btw guys, there is nothing wrong if you miss a fill-up in sprit monitor, you can resume at any time by inputting fresh data.

I set the cruise control at 78 mph in Nevada now, a couple mph slower than in Cali. But there are a lot of construction zones on the way into Vegas so watch out. The NHP likes to sit at the little median cutouts. You can spot them by looking for the blue reflective signs. There's a single warning sign, and then two signs bracketing the cutout about 150 yards further up the road. Stay out of the left lane and just pulse and glide. Pass a cutout, accelerate to 85+ mph, then gradually slow back down as you approach the next cutout. If you have a radar detector, they're also emitting like crazy. They don't bother with instant on, so you can spot 'em pretty reliably.

Daniel, I stopped using Spritmonitor when I started using different fuels. I put about 5000 miles on E85 in the G37 and that just screws with the whole mileage calculation. Despite that, my lifetime in car monitor shows me at 21.2 mpg now, which is pretty good (and well above the EPA mixed) despite the 20% of the mileage done on E85 (which averages about 25% less economy).

Actually, you can also add different fuels in spritmonitor, and it will calculate different averages for each of them. To me it would also be interesting to see how your FE varies depending on fuel, so that's not a real reason to stop Shawn :)

As soon as you'd get enough miles on ethanol I'd add another entry for your G37 !

PS: sprit.monitor right now only has E10, but it wouldn't really matter for TOV database as long as you tell me it's E85.
