I realize that it's become sort of an Acura thing, but it'd look SOOOO much better if there were glass in that chasm of bodywork over the rear wheels. I know it's generic and me-too, but a-la CLS and A7.
Overall though, yeah, I'd buy the shit out of an ILX 5 door!

I assume it remains because the ILX production car has it. Of course, so does the Civic Sedan.

Though this is 'fantasy', its also somewhat of a suggestion for Honda/Acura to raise the bar higher than they've become recently accustomed. Getting added formats to a line means having to accept some of the production limitations such as keeping the same rear doors - even with their kinks in place.
I guess everyone has their likes/dislikes. I love the overall form but still hate the doorhandles. If this were available (your notchback), I wouldn't let a kink or doorhandles stop me from putting one in the garage.

As I picture that in my head, I think that line arching down would "dump out" like it did on the past Civic sedan.
I picture a point where that line would meet the bottom window trim, it could create a point of tension in its proximity to the arch of the fender-flare line. Currently it looks as if their intention was to angle it upward and lift, somewhat in parallel to the rising fender line - trying to be clever with the greenhouse, aping the Lexus IS and 3 Series, and at the same time be anti-Civic (a disguise). I guess, the graphics of it...
If there was a piece of glass back there I don't know what shape it would be - maybe like what I did on that RLX "coupe?" What ever it could be, it would have to echo/mimic/harmonize with the fender-flare and the descending line of the roof through the hatch. Hmmm...
Anyways, what I like visually about the hatch is that it "counterweights" the protrusion of the fenders (they really POP for no apparent reason) at the nearly 3/4 view. And as I said elsewhere, reduces that Dodge Avenger moment where the three elements (kink window trim, fender-flare and back C-pillar line) all "pinch" as the converge on each other.
Consider this: Simply take away that rear fender flare then honestly ask, "What remains?" That's the trick to exposing gimmick.
Interesting stuff...

Another neat concept Neal.
I like the hatch sedan idea... I liked the Mazda6 hatch although it was a slow seller...

Yes, I love that Jovian8 - good addition. This is the kind of vehicle I keep hoping will come to the US.

Oy, I love it.

More inspiration, possibly? I don't think it would be a bad thing for Acura to dope the rear end design on this car...

Also, don't get me wrong, Neal, your designs are bang on, and I'd much rather drive your version than Acura's at the end of the day!
Keep up the good work!

I love how that window kink continues to get linked to Hoffmeister.
People, go review Kaiser automobiles.

Yes, we all know how to read Wikipedia pages. The design is most well known because of the BMW usage, however. It is similar to how Kleenex became the household name for tissue.
