Car went airborne like in movies. What should I check for?    (Score: 1, Normal) 05-02-2012 21:52

I took a late night trip out of town on an unfamiliar road for a business deal and the road seemed flat so I went a bit faster, about 110-120km/h. Then out of the darkness there are 3 'big wave' bumps on the road, the first two isn't so bad but the third one is the one that was the launching ramp and I think I flew like a few feet into the air. The landing wasn't actually that bad surprisingly, there is no crash or jolt it just flop back onto the road, and the underside is not scrape. I am not sure if it went full limit of the absorber and springs to the bump stop. I will assume it did, since the abosorber have to deflect the first two bumps.

Question, what should I check for, my next service is coming up soon so I will check the underside when the car is on the lift. When I stopped I check the absorbers for leaks and just some inspection from the outside but this morning I went to work again I haven't really go through the car properly, but seems nothing wrong, however I notice the steering now goes a bit to the left. Will go back and check again when I have the time.

Hopefully nothing is damaged just maybe alignment again but just asking what other things should I look out for. My car is a Honda City, but basically the underside and most of the components is a Fit to give an idea of the layout.

That sucks. I would think that if nothing scraped and the car drives fine (other than the slight pull to the left) then it's probably ok but I would recommend an alignment.

Funny thing is that often on car mag covers, they will have a snap shot of a tested car in mid air. Never knew why.

First you should check whether you have more chest hair or suddenly girls got aroused when you walk past them.

Second, did you feel the tires bumped the wheel well insides? If I'm not mistaken, it's not the suspension you should worry about, but the suspension arms. My step mom's old BMW 318 (E46) had a cracked front suspension arm, and one of the mechanic suspect that our old driver hit a wicked pothole (a lot in my city) or did a duke of hazard police chase (in local parlance), but most likely the pothole.

Even if the shock absorber compressed to its maximum point, you still have the tire to absorb the impact. However, depending on the angle of the impact, one part of the suspension setup should get all the grunt.

Just take your car, if I'm not mistaken current gen City, to the dealer and have a look at the underside. Don't wait until the service interval.

Yeah, but the thing is if it went airborne and then land gently on level road would be quite fun thing to do (if not my car) but this was hitting three bumps (the road sunk in several sections deep enough to cause several waves, they are not speedd bumps), each one getting worse until I take off into space... making the landing(s) worse everytime, and the landing was still on uneven road. There are scratch marks on the road so I am not the only victim, though I did not scrape the road (I let go of the brakes before the road dips in).

I lol'ed at your post. I checked and I don't have chest hair now, never had them, it's not growing now. Maybe I need to have bad guys chasing me and shooting at me for that to effect. Thanks for making my day.

Yeah I should check the suspension arms too. The landing was surprisingly cushiony, I was expecting worse a crashing jolt. I have hit the bump stops in my other cars before, but never in this one, so I'm actually not sure if it did use up all the suspension or if there is more travel to it. I will think of a way to get the service center to check without them suspecting it is my fault, the car still has 2 years warranty to it.

We did that in an buddy's 78 Pontiac Catalina. The next week the ball joint went out as we were turning a corner. I would just have all the suspension checked out.
