In areas that see a lot of inclement weather Subarus are very popular because they are the only relatively inexpensive way to get an AWD system in a non truck/SUV. In the Pacific NW or any area that is a major ski area, you'll see lots of Subies, and most _won't_ be WRX/STI models. Just your everyday Impreza, Forester and Outback.

That said, in my business, the vast majority of my customers are male. The brand that we tune which has the highest proportion of female customers? Subaru. Number two? Nissan pickups. Scion is a close third. I know, go figure.

Well this I have to have a Subaru because i live in Vermont is blown out of proportion. Your correct in that they offer more bang for the buck than most in AWD form, but there active AWD helps in all conditions which most people overlook

In the NW, the Subaru is a fashion statement, just like a Benz is in Newport Beach.

Mind you, FWD is all you need in the NW. It's usually wet and slippery but FWD will see you though.

AWD just makes you a moron.. like that kid in an Audi that decided to come down while I was making my way uphill in the Odyssey on a steep single car lane (narrow old street, cars parked on both sides) with a foot of heavy, wet snow on the ground.

The idiot -in his 20s- didn't know (a) the uphill driver ALWAYS has the way and (b) just because his AWD could do down, he might not be able to back up.... Man, like I was ready to clobber the moron... thankfully the neighbors came out and help out the idiot get around.

Oh... of course, this was in Seattle. So, and he was in an Audi. Folks with Subarus tend to have more sense.

It's an REI vs. Eddie Bauer thing, if you understand that, then you'll fit up there.

PS- I like Subarus. Maybe if I lived up there I'd get me a Forester MT5 with all weather floor mats. No need to go fast up there.. they all go slow. But then, I'm more into REI than Eddie Bauer.

How much do you like the tech package?

The only one I was going to consider was the tech package. and quite honestly, the dash on the non-navi TSX is just fugly. That cheap segmented LCD display just looks crude.
Gotta have the navi (and yeah, we all have smartphones in our house too - their navi systems are cool but inadequate) and I like the power liftgate and ELS audio system. I just wish the TSX had the more convenient keyless entry system like the ILX and RDX have. I don't give a damn about push to start, but I love just walking up to the locked car and have it automatically unlock for me as soon as I touch the door handle.

It would be really cool if i could set a route in google maps on my computer or phone and then somehow sync it with the route in the car's navi system.

To me, ELS is worth the upgrade all by itself.

It's really a spectacular system and the only system (except the Sony/ADS in my 85 Civic Si) where I will listen and enjoy music.

I'm too spoiled by my stereo systems.

I have Rotel/Adcom/Paradigm at home. Please add more commentary.

In no particular order and not noting multiplicities (*) ... Linn, Conrad Johnson, Audio Research, NAD, Teac, Marantz, Emotiva, M-Audio, Acoustic Reality, First Watt, Grado, Magnepan, Acoustic Energy, Quad, PSB, ADS, Kenwood, etc.... seven audio systems, one 7.0 system, all with computers attached... plus more stuff in the audio museum.. aka closet..

And I just got a Nuforce HDP to play around with...

(*) When I find something I like, I tend to stick with the brand on future purchases.

Umm actually I was hoping for an audiophile opinion about what makes the ELS so much better than the base system.

I probably came off as an ass but I was truly interested in your audiophile opinion. I'm sort of a "bang for your buck" audio guy.

Take into account these:

a) this is my wife's car and she thinks her cruddy Accord's stereo sounds great;

b) I listen to podcasts;

c) I still like better audio and don't necessarily mind paying for it.

Think about it and let me know.

Thanks. :)

Congrats on the TSX. I'm not a wagon fan but I must say that one has a substantial look on the road.

I went to check out the RDX this past weekend (nice!) and also sat in a TSX. Had the V6 been available when I bought my Accord, I would have a TSX sedan ;-(.

How about a pic or two? No one ever post pics of their new rides.

Haven't had time to shoot a pic yet. I'm not going to be able to get any until next week. I'll put some up then.

Jeff,

Are you going to drop in an inch or so and put a set of polished black chrome rimes on it and tint the windows? I got a call today, that wasn't for your wagon? was it for a wagon for someone up here?

Could be doing something sorta fun with the sportwagon soon.... I guess we'll see. stay tuned....

I have my wagon so you should return that call, because there could be another one needed

We didn't close on the TSX wagon this weekend- got a bunch of buns in the oven and I need to make sure some of them don't burn me before I spend money on a car we want more than need.

Hopefully by the end of this month things will come together.

I'm really looking forward to having the TSXW around. It'll be good stuff.

Lols Audi. They're great if you think that pulling the engine for routine maintenance is OK, and if you think that replacing the control arms and mostly the entire suspension every 60k at $3500 is a great deal.

No thanks bro.

Coming from Honda/Acura, Audi and VW resale values seem shockingly low, so though I really do like a lot of their vehicles I would only consider leasing them (or any German vehicle, for that matter). And I wouldn't want to lease one for more than 36 months, preferably more like 24-30 months.

As one who takes them in trade on a regular basis, they are not worth the lint on a dogs ass.........NICE CARS to sit in and play with, but the problems we get with these relatively NEW cars, 2007, 08, 09's with 35 to 50,000 miles.....it is a disgrace.

Everything is high cost, even on a VW.........Stay away from German cars.........

Thanks for your honest advice. When my GTI lease is up, I will definitely return it and get TSX sedan as my commuter. Now, I have 05 MDX as my kids transporter. Since I do love wagons, I will either "short" lease Germans or, purchase an available Japanese wagon, preferably Acura in 2 years. I was even dreaming of TL SH-AWD Sport Wagon (not going to happen)....

But the lease payments are also higher because of the lower residual...

(1) The inclusion of a center channel speaker on the ELS anchors the imaging up front. You can hear a clean image even with the window(s) down, a real treat. It has an uncanny way of projecting the sound out front (for the front passengers) where it belongs. It has GREAT IMAGING.

(2) The system has great dynamics and its components are well matched. You can crank it and never overwhelm the system.... Of course, I always kept the bass/treble flat and the subwoofer at a reasonably level.. meaning LOW.. no THUMP, THUMP.

Even at high levels, you can hear low level details.. Loud instruments do not overwhelm nor hide quiet sounds in the recording. It has great DYNAMIC CONTRAST.

(3) I had the DVD-A system.. I guess that's gone. I used to burn my own CD-Rs downrez'd from 24/96 masters that I recorded off my LPs. Nowadays you can download 24/96 (and higher) recordings off the Internet... I recommend you burn your own CD-Rs.

(4) Podcasts? Get real. Try loading Redbook WAV files into your iPod and play those back. They will blow your socks off.

(5) The stereo in the Accord sucks. It's LOUD yes... but I found that in our 05 EX MT6 V6 the system had a huge bump in the mid bass that overwhelmed the sound.. I could not get rid of it at any volume, so I simply gave up on it. It sucked. A waste of money and effort.

Take a nice CD with you and your wife.. something well recorded... do you have anything by Paul Simon recorded in the 70s? How about Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon? How about anything recorded by Warner Brothers in the 70s... America Homecoming? A Horse with no Name (delicious)... You need to have something that sounds like the real thing, not any of that recent compressed caca that bears no semblance to a real person/instrument.

"On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...
"

Do you like Frank Sinatra with Nelson Riddle? Live in Las Vegas.
Von Karajan, first cycle (pre digital rec) of the Beethoven cycle.. I love the 2nd movement of the 2nd Symphony.. or how about the coda of the 5th? Yowsa...
Frank Zappa's Apostrophe.. Cosmik Debris... GUITAR ALLMIGHTY...

Play this in the car... I get goose bumps just listening to it on a cheap pc speaker from the Internet... Get the CDs...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o-Onn92w5c

It's OUTSTANDING... the music is emotional, gut wrenching a trip of emotions... on a good system it's impossible to sit still (we've been blessed to have seen this live with the Berlin, Vienna and Philharmonia Symphonic Orchestras... ).

OK... here it comes...

The Eagles.. Hotel California...

(Now I own you).

You need recordings that are NOT compressed, that sound natural and that go loud and soft... real voices, guitars, DRUMS... (Victim of Love)....

"What kind of love have you got?
You should be home, but you're not
A room full of noise and dangerous boys
Still makes you thirsty and hot
I heard about you and that man
There's just one thing I don't understand
You say he's a liar and he put out
Your fire
How come you still got his gun in your hand?
Victim of love , I see a broken heart
You got your stories to tell
Victim of love, it's such an easy part
And you know how to play it so well
"

I could go on and on and on and on..

Take those with you, sit down in the car.. start with the volume at a reasonable level... my experience in the TL was that the clarity of the system (like any such High End system) is so that you can really, REALLY hear the music at reasonably soft levels, without having to crank it (that's called MICRODYNAMIC RESOLUTION)....

Then, turn up Pink Floyd's DSOTM... on Money (not necessarily my preferred song...) and enjoy the effortless swings from soft (pppp) to loud (ffff) (MACRODYNAMIC RESOLUTION).. note that even as some sounds are loud, you can still hear the soft sounds... Listen to the clocks ringing and note how the treble is natural... not grating in the ears.

Finally, if you got it, play Paul Simon's Diamonds in the Soles of Her Shoes... I guarantee you'll both get out of the car and still dancing.. and then signing the check and then driving the car around while the song plays on and on...

Who knows... you might even spring for a Real Stereo at home.

Bottom line.. the ELS System has

Excellent Soundstaging
Great Dynamic Contrast
Great Microdynamic resolution
Great Macrodynamic resolution

But most of all, it has PACE. It will make you move and dance and sing... Best thing you can do when stuck on the 405.

Oh, speaking of home.. I just one of these... used....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150799198510?ssPageName=STRK:null:IT

I may yet cure of listening to crap... Good Sound is not expensive.

Damn... now I need to get the TSX myself... ;-)

This is one of my pet peeves with many systems. I hate when you can hear where the music is coming from in a car.

In most late model Hondas, the tweeters were moved to the sail panels on the doors. With my 08 6-6, music sounded like it was coming from the top of the driver's door. When I adjusted the balance, it reduced the bass and of course then the imaging was really skewed for the passenger. The older Accords with the tweeters firing off the windshields did a great job with
staging sound at the front of the car without a center channel. While other attributes might have been lacking, the 7th gen sound wasn't as directional as the 8th systems were and overall I liked the 7th gen sound better (without Honda's sorry excuse for a sub woofer).

Bose gets a lot of crap for thier systems but I'm really happy with the set up in my Mazda. 10 speakers with a dedicated center speaker. No matter where you sit in the car, the music sounds like it's coming from some where above the hood (it can be biased to the center of the car) and you can clearly hear left/right channel separation when it's present in the music. The 6 is quiet at speed so nuances are easily heard at low or high volumes. And while it doesn't have a head pounding THUMP to it, the bass is strong and clear. You don't realize how loud the system is blasting until you go to speak and realize you can't even hear yourself. Only after I turn it down and feel my ears ringing do I realize how loud it really was.
