Family-Friendly Honda CR-V Narrowly Outpoints Mazda CX-5 in Consumer Reports' Small SUV Tests
Consumer Reports found that the CR-V EX (tested price $26,455) is a more family-friendly SUV, with a large backseat, easy access, lots of cargo space, and a comfortable ride. It is also notably quicker and more responsive than the CX-5, with a refined drivetrain. On the downside, the CR-V suffers from pronounced road noise, sizable rear blind spots, and subpar at-the-limit handling. Overall, CR's testers found the CR-V is functional and easy to live with, if not particularly exciting to drive.

The CX-5 Touring (tested price $27,125) is more athletic and engaging to drive, thanks to its agile handling, taut cornering, and responsive steering. It's more at home on a twisty road and is more likely to satisfy enthusiast drivers. The CX-5 also delivers the best fuel economy in its class-25 mpg overall-thanks to Mazda's new Skyactiv technology. The mid-level Touring version came well equipped with a full-power seat, keyless ignition and a blind-spot monitoring system. But the CX-5's trade-offs include a smaller, noisier cabin; a choppy ride on the highway; and slower acceleration.

Escape vs CR-V vs CX-5
The interesting thing about children's stories is how well they apply to our adult lives. Sure, you can have your porridge any way you like it. The Honda CR-V is like oatmeal -- not very flavorful, but packed with benefits. The Ford Escape is a warm bowl of peppered grits packed with lots of spice and flavor -- though perhaps too much for some. And then the Mazda CX-5 is a delicate polenta -- it's the same basic idea, but somehow this porridge comes across as more substantial, more expensive, and more elegant. Or as Goldilocks might say, it's just right.

As I am starting to see many 2012 CR-Vs in traffic now, along with a host of 2011 and earlier CR-Vs, I am struck more and more by the unfortunate styling of the tail section of the 2012 model. It has drifted into the Hyundai school of styling…too complex and too many exaggerated shapes (as has much of Honda’s and Acura’s styling, recently). The 2011 (and previous) models are looking better and better, with a clean, elegant simplicity to their taillight and rear hatch appearance. (Although I at first did not like that model, due to its "Hey, I'm a Volvo too!" appearance.)

I know the sales numbers indicate that I am in a tiny minority on this topic…but it is just a shame that they could not have incorporated the good mechanical changes into the 2012 model, without this unfortunate styling. The sales numbers might have been even better.

Just based on our customers - most people prefer the 2012's styling, I'd guess at least 80% but for sure some don't. I prefer the 12. A lot of people still prefer the boxy gen 2. It's nothing like the Odyssey or last versus this gen Pilot, where a sizable number preferred the outgoing vehicle (and still do).

Ford used 30% more gas than the Mazda. ECO Boost indeed. ECO Blood bath more like.

CB77 I tend to agree with you.

The more I look at the '12 CRV, the more the rear is looking wrong. Not because of the detailed feature shapes as you mention but mainly because of the hunched back look of the overall shape.

OTOH I saw several post MMT 3rd gen CRV which actually look pretty nice, more elegant.

I'm sure that hunched back perhaps provides more rear cargo space, but it just doesn't look good.
I wished the 4G CRV could have had the Volvo XC60's rear look with its flared rear fenders and sleek rear lights.

I've become accustomed to most of hondas recent models, whether they are bland or polarizing. The CR-V falls into the group that I just cannot stand and doubt I ever will. The main issue is that it reminds me of someones head that has been artificially enlarged to resemble that of an egg. I don't think it will look nice to me, esp since the previous gens trunk area looks much more proportional.

I currently have a 2002 CR-V. I tested CR-V and CX-5 last week. While CR-V is a safe choice, CX-5 would be my choice: it offers a bit better value, better handling, much better design outside (and a little bit better inside), and most important to me the availability of 6MT or 6sp auto with manual control and 40/20/40 split folding seat (very useful for 2 kids). Other minor pluses include keyless start/stop, soft dash, and darker color gloss trim (vs. the gray fake wood trim in CR-V).

One gripe with CR-V is the tight space for my right knee. I tend to sit closer for better pedal control and my right knee keeps bumping into the hard plastic. Not an issue with CX-5 or my '02.

Manual shifting the CX-5 automatic is actually kind of fun. I like the fact that it's the same scheme as our bimmer.

Lots of middle aged women and men drive small CUVs, and I'd rather drive something that is a bit more fun. In 2002, CR-V is a clear leader in the segment. Now, I'm not sure.

What?

"It is also notably quicker and more responsive than the CX-5, with a refined drivetrain." Who would have thought?

Also from the article:
The Mercedes-Benz ML350 and BMW X5 luxury SUVs were also tested against each other. The X5's tested price of $62,675 is almost $6,000 more than the comparably equipped $56,960 ML. In everyday driving, both the ML and X5 exhibited good handling, with little body lean. The ML's steering is responsive but a touch vague. The more agile X5 holds the edge in handling and steering, but its steering feels heavy in low-speed situations such as when parking. At its handling limits, the X5 was capable and controlled; the ML350 was considerably less capable, with lower limits. Both vehicles rank mid-pack in this category, below the less expensive Acura MDX ($46,715) and Lexus RX 350 ($47,381).

yeah, trust Consumer Reports to buy a washer and dryer or a Toyota is one thing, to buy a fun to drive vehicle is another story.

Consumer Reports obviously values feather light steering more than handling.

I know it's not likely, but Honda should drop in EDT in the '13 CRV.

One reason the CX-5 can compete with the CRV is due to the skyactive drivetrain. EDT would level the playing field.

Implement EDT on the CRV (200HP, 180lb-ft, 25/33mpg) and also offer a trim with 6MT, options for 18" wheels and sport suspension and that'll crush the CX-5.

We all can dream, but Honda will not put a 6MT or sport suspension in the CR-V, despite the much higher volume they sell vs. Mazda. Honda is set to get Toyota buyers, and sport is not on their mind.

If you haven't tested CX-5, you should do it.

I am road noise averse and it seems both CRV and CX5 have a good bit of both for new cars. The Escape is being completely restyled and reportedly with better mileage. Question is: will the Escape be quieter?

I've seen a few '12 CRV's on the road and I have to say I find the look of the previous gen more attractive. The rear of the '12 does not look right. Egg shaped was an apt way to put it. The overall styling lacks symmetry and cohesiveness to my eye.

Mazda has been putting out some compelling offerings. That they continue with 'Mazdaspeed' products makes it clear that they have the desires of the enthusiast in mind, while Honda seems to be trending toward alienating (Civic Si) that group.

They even offer a 6-manual in the CX-5, albiet in 2wd trim only.

OTOH I've seen some CX-5's on the road and while the front end looks good, the rear and overall look doesn't seem "new" and kinda "used to seeing that".

I crept up on a CX-5 on the highway yesterday and only after being 1-2 car lengths in front of me did I realize it was the new CX-5.
