I love the day one to today concept.........
Honda feels wounded, no doubt. It is felt deep inside. But they brought it on them selves to the sense they didn't have it in them to think the Koreans could over come them so fast AND their customer base would leave them so fast........BUT they don't realize their customer base, at least their LOYAL customer base is from the 70's, 80's and 90's.......the ones who started buying cars in 2000 to now, saw the change Honda/Acura went through and didn't care for the products.
Now, they are in "Come back" mode and that end quoit you saw, "we won't be beat" is something going around Honda right now.........Lets "C" how they spread that love to the 2013 Accord.

You mention Honda's arrogance toward the Korean competition and not taking them seriously. I have seen the same thing play out in the Motorcycle division of AHM.
Back in the early '90s, the Honda field reps started picking-up on what a threat Polaris ATV's could become for us. We started cautioning the Japanese staff at AHM about this, but we were totally ignored. They essentially said: "How could a crudely-built, 2-stroke, belt drive, CVT-transmissioned ATV from Polaris ever sell in large numbers? The American public is too smart to fall for such a product."
Now, with Polaris snapping at our ass in the ATV biz, those words ring pretty hollow.

You know, when I trained in the Military they would stress, "Once you thought you were out of dangers path, that is when you got attacked and taken down, shot and beaten.......never think you CAN'T be beat, once you think you are invincible, you have then been beat......"

I too look forward to "C'ing" the 2013 Accord.
Had fun working on a 2005 stick shift Accord LX today. Nothing flash just a simple functional car. Ok its radio was on the fritz and if the customer decides to spend the dollars we can replace that easily.
In comparison, an overly complicated Volvo xc70 whose turbo was leaking. Think owner may dump the car and get a simple Subaru.

So true, Andrew. I kind of see the same approach in the Honda Accord ads with the jet, the old Accord,.. the 'from what we learned here.... went here' commercial - seems to be an attempt to draw those old fans back with nostalgia.
If I had to choose a mantra for Honda, it would probably be "don't bite the hand that feeds you". They should put a muzzle on Mendel and his folks...with their foolish comments and reactions, like 'no boy racer' . He just comes off like an ass because of it, and alienates the nostalgic buyers you mentioned. With that and his track record, I'm still wondering why he hasn't been kicked to the curb. Smart thing, tho, making the Accord global and not completely under his control.

Seriously, the balance between completely destroying their reputation and slowly recovering from the downfall lies in the 2013 Accord/Inspire and Civic. I really hope they didn't mess up the Accord inline-4 by adding a CVT transmission.
Hmmm...maybe the sudden CVT move was to get customers to buy the more expensive V-6 models?

I delivered a 2012 Si Navi today to the perfect demographic, a mid to late 20 something male coming out of a Subaru Imprezia. I told him about my 91 Integra and that even tho I had a lot of quick cooking rice and now I drive a slow cook rice (HCH) I will ALWAYS have a Honda boy racer in me.........He laughed as I said how envious I was he got to drive the Si home..........

Let's not mix up meanings.
負けるもんか doesn't mean "We won't be beaten" as in "we're invincible", and really means "you can stomp on us and bring us down but you can't break us". The meaning and use of "makerumonka" embodies "can't let ourselves be beaten, we won't lose" and typically is the stance of the underdog who has the will to fight the heavyweights in an uphill battle.
Everyone wants to put down the good guy. It's called Honda-ijime. Then the earthquakes and tsunami, radiation. Floods in Thailand. They've been dealt a bad hand. And the moral to the story is? SO WHAT? We'll keep on fighting, because losing isn't an OPTION.

You got it, and that is why everyone I know at Honda is focused on not being on the tail end........It's the Tortoise and the hare, Honda for so many years thought they couldn't be beat, but a lot of it's employees saw others gaining where upper management shrugged it off.........
Notice how it all happened at once............The Elantra, Cruze, Focus, Earthquake, flood..........all with in 6 months of each other and Honda sank like the Titanic........AND then, and ONLY then did the upper management realize it was losing for the past 6 or 7 years........OR they just finely admitted it..........
So the people I know at Honda all have the attitude, as you said, losing is not an option.........They are not chanting "we won't be beat" LOL, but they have drive now to win, to bring back that 1988-1993 winning attitude we all loved so much.......

I really don't think Honda would purposely engineer a CVT to lure customers to the higher, more expensive trims. That makes NO SENSE no matter how it's viewed.
The few initial reviews of the new ED/CVT combination were more than glowing and there was high praise for both the engine and CVT How well they complimented each other. It's been stated that this powertrain is stellar.

Its not how it drives day 1 - its when the CVT snaps a few years later... oh and speaking of stellar, some of us still remember the rather stellar 5AT failures episode.
They still don't get it - even if they're hurting right now.
