Those 18" "Detroit" wheels that are standard on the GTI are awful looking, in addition to having a ride disadvantage to 17's.

As an owner of the current GTI (a 2010 4D DSG), I'd say that it's one of the least inspired or inspiring performance cars I've owned. The DSG transmission is dreadful at launch and pleasing only under way (nice quick downshifts). The basic car is a carryover from the Mk V with minimal structural or other changes, so it's a very OLD platform. Handling is so-so and the electronics are horribly unreliable. The electronic pseudo limited slip differential is erratic and the AC feeble. Front seats are great; rears are torture devices. The 18s ride like crap and GTIs with the factor 17s typically have better lap times (same driver) as the 18s so the 18s are all fo sho and not fo go.
All in, setting the current generation GTI as a target sets a very low bar. The turbo 2.0 has nice grunt, though, but runs out of breath quickly as revs rise. It's probably the most overrated performance hatch available, better suited to ferrying old guys (like me) to and from the pub on match days than anyone seriously interested in performance motoring.
I haven't driven the current Si, but found the 8th gen to be buzzy and annoying in a "wish I was an S2000" way. I cross shopped the 8th gen when I bought the GTI (and the MS3). I didn't have enough hair on my nuts for the MS3 and felt the 8th gen would disgrace my fond memories of my departed S2000, so the GTI was my compromise. Doh!
It'd be harder for the 9th gen Si to be much worse than the 8th gen or current GTI IMO.

Which part? That in my opinion the GTI I own currently isn't such a good car or the part about me finding the 8th gen Civic buzzy in a "the high revs made the plastic bits in the car buzz" kind of way that my S2000 didn't share, or the part about me owning more cars than you've had birthdays? Oh wait. I just added that last bit. But there you go.

Guess you didn't know, but be prepared if you diss the 8th gen Civic especially the Si ;).

Interesting thing about the plastics buzzing. I posted earlier somewhere I noticed even my friend's 8th gen HCH interior plastics started to buzz around a lot more nowadays if I am sitting at the rear (not really noticeable at the front).

The 6MT ILX I drove had a peculiar plastic buzzing/rattle around the steering column as the temp got in to the 80s. I'd figure it was a preproduction malady..

The S2000 and K20 Si are very different cars yet very similar by how amazing they are.
PBH made that passionate comment because 5-Honda-Man is being silly in trying to rekindle a fire (8th gen vs 9th gen) that was extinguished is previous threads...

Of course. The point is that we all make a frivolous comment once in a while. No point in calling them a liar.
As a matter of fact, I know of a member who mistakenly read a post and came to the conclusion that Ito was no longer in charge.
He went on to say,
"This is a great day for Honda and we should all celebrate."
Should we call that guy a liar?

I drive an 8th gen Si everyday and I find it to exude the most pleasurable, exhilarating engine notes, especially north of the vtec threshold in "an exotic Farrari-like" way. Neither the current GTI nor the so-called 9th gen Si can hope to match it's brilliance.:-)

In total agreement! The 8th gen Si was a high-water mark... I'm totally in love with mine!

I'm late....but I would hope an all new GTI would be better than the current SI. If your all new car isn't better than an older competitor, then you're doing something wrong IMHO.
