I'm thinking that the BMW's hofmeister kink has been overused by automakers, be it Honda, Nissan, lexus, infiniti or Acura.
Even the RLX has it.
It looks like designers have been a bit too much inspired by this bmw design attribute.
I strongly think those inspired by bmw, should start thinking outside of bmw and come-out with a c-pillar that is different.
Anybody else think that the kink is over applied?

The ILX does well without it so I was surprised to see it return on the RLX.

It is a predictable and safe play. You can't blend into the scenery without it these days.

I agree with the thread starter. Many automakers and especially Honda use it when they cannot figure out what else to do with their designs rather than an integral part. As such it has become the Hoffmeister "pervert" rather than a the Hoffmeister "kink" on cars other than BMW.

Better a "safe" Hofmeister kink than some ridiculous-looking "wanna-be coupe" look. Many Auto makers have been trying to make their sedans look like 4 door coupes with the sloping roof line and a certain c-pillar treatment. It's a theme that I don't particularly care for, especially when it has failed, and it HAS failed on some models, IMO. It simply looks like crap when not done right, and if you can't pull it off right, then don't try it at all.
Is the kink safe on the RLX? Sure, but it works.

I like the kink look no matter what car it is. To be honest, I'm not sure if there are many options for that part of a car. You basically have 3 choices:
The Kink
The straight
or Semi kink
Overall I like the kink better but would prefer the other two window designs over this:

^Haha. Trying WAY too hard (refering to the last car with the wierd S-shaped kink).

Due to todays short rear decks, and more sloped roof designs, its become a basic graphic design problem of balancing positive(sheetmetal)/negative(glass) shapes. The other prerequisite being the ability to roll the rear door glass completely down. The 3 german luxury marques illustrate the 3 most ideal solutions. BMW has the kink, Mercedes have the thick C pillar, audi has the sixth window incorporated into the pillar.
The images of the 7th and 8th accord show that it went from the mercedes approach to the kink, and it shows that the advantage of the kink is that it allows greater glass area. I would've liked to see the Acura line use the 6th window in the pillar a la audi.

Funny thing though...I instantly recognized that as an Infiniti without ever having seen the car before.

I wonder if this will be a new Infiniti trademark? We've seen it already on the JX.

You should see that this week from us. An RLX GT "Coupe."

Good example on the hofmeister kink with a twist:
For some reason it reminds me of the bikini top on roadsters:
As for Infiniti, I use to draw those swoopy c-pillars when i doodled in my college notebooks - it looks better on paper :-(
