Here's a rough photoshop sketch I was playing around with awhile back. The idea is basically a bit more functional, with the roofline going higher, somewhat crv-like side DLO, and a bit more continuity in contour/cut lines.

Thanks, doesn't look to bad. I personally like more of a wagon than the current one is, but doubt it will happen.

Nice. The split rear window is gone in your version, a major annoyance for us. Fisheye mirrors were a must for us, as we have to drive it like we did our old '84 Dodge custom van with the curtains on the windows - put your signal on and pray no one's over there.

Daily Crosstour:

This one retains all the hard points of the original...just a reskinning of the cat. The tail lamp shape's still a little too indefinite I think, but I'm just goofing around before I get to work. I don't know why it appeals to me so much to play with the Crosstour design, I guess its because its so easy to improve upon! You almost can't do anything worse.

Fun! Can you make a SUV version but with a Land Rover Evoque chopped look profile? Think that would be interesting...

The crisp horizontal lines of the evoque is a natural translation to the honda idiom so I can try that out.

Here's a shot at an evoquesque chopped suv approach to the Crosstour:

Its funny but part of the way into it, I realized that a "chopped SUV" isn't that far removed from a wagon. I then did a search of the tsx wagon, and realized I ended up not too far from it in terms of the greenhouse.

Thanks for the favorable comments. I think your "Evoque" approach is viable....read somewhere that they're increasing work shifts since the demand for that vehicle is so high. Something honda management certainly hoped for with the crosstour, and despite its not hitting, the mark, I actually applaud them for taking the gamble. Hopefully the execution is better in the 2nd gen.

A7 inspired would be cool....I kind of hope the RL would take that route, but it sounds like it'll be more of a formal sedan.

Had to try some crude ideation sketches that are a little more bonkers:

I might work one of these up to a more polished rendering.

I really like the Evoquesque take. IMO it's a good idea. Honda wanted a bit of an flagship, lux feel to the CT and a "VW CC" approach may have been the thing to do. More upmarket than the CRV but a bit smaller footprint and *way* more stylish than the Pilot.

Personal preference: I think your red Evoque CT could have a less slanting d pillar, giving it a tiny bit more space, while getting inspiration from Honda's own Civic hatch of old:

or

Accord Aerodecks:

or

Euro Accord Wagon (only have beefed up rear wheel arches)

or

CT in Euro Accord Tourer drag:

As for the RL, I too wish it would have been a '4 door coupe', While i'm not a fan of the marketing hoopla around those type of vehicles, they tend to look closer to the cool concept cars we all love, with a trade-off in space/visibility - an expectable trade off for a flagship in my opinion

I sat in a A7 at the auto show...BIG car, tight space inside...

it appeals because there are some design elements that could have worked to make a huge hit for Honda.. but they were completely mismanaged in translation to the product.

Work in progress on the second sketch presented above.

Its not as bonkers as the initial sketch, (for fear of being permanently kicked off this site....it is pretty mature and engineering driven, which alas is also a great part of the appeal.) The only real remnant of overt goofiness i suppose are those massive round juke like fogs. The direction on the sketch was interesting to me, due to that continuous line running from the grille, above the front wheel and tapering all the way around to meet the rear tail light. The grille references the classic honda era like the accord aerodeck you posted, that has a U shape with the body color extending into the opening at the top. Its interesting that those hondas presented such a distinctive down road graphic, before the term was even coined.

The D pillar on the Evoque CT....yes, I also started it out more upright, but made it more raked. I guess part of the rationale, was 1) despite this, it offers more space than the fastback style of the crosstour, and 2) I think part of the intent of the vehicle is to be style for style's sake, but you're right and probably a productionized version would lean more towards function.

Went on vacation to the windy city, so had to take a break from this. Also wrapping up another project on the side, but thats another story. Anyway I doubt that anyone's tuning in to this anymore since the subject's been taken off the front page, and in a day, it'll be even older news with the release of the RL and Crosstour update, so I'm just following through for the sake of following through.

Just to recap, the idiosyncrasy of the concept sketch that appealed to me was that contour line that was tangent to the wheel well--this is something I don't recall seeing in any modern production car--for a good reason, since it would seemingly call for some odd resolution of surfaces where they meet in that area. So I suppose this is a good a time as any to explain where I'm coming from. There was a window in time where I could have pursued car design as a career. I was enrolled in one of the most highly regarded schools to study this, met with the dept chair, and could have gone in that direction. I didn't, and the nice thing is I can pursue things that break certain conventions, even ones as simple as that tangent line. Of course vtec.net isn't the right place to playing out in the open with these ideas, so its not such a bad thing that this is stale news.
