Well, it's ultimately either just add revs, or just add dispacement.

Will a Subaru unit survive 9,000 rpm?

They would need to bore the engine rather than stroke it to achieve some level of ease of revs, but that much power out of an NA engine means a pretty high volumetric efficiency... I don't think with current emissions regs they'd be able to do it from the factory.

How about using the 5-litre V8 from the Lexus IS-F then ??
Somebody's already done it!

Yes, yes, there are tons of technically valid reason why it is not plausible they can make 250hp from the 2.0l on the BRZ. Yes, yes, Toyota and Subaru are likely to be bullshitting. But then the biggest thing is they ALREADY have the 200hp BRZ so they can say anything they want and lots of people, including the mainstream media will believe them and the claim will go viral, and their reputation will hit the roof and lots of interest, attention, and admiration will go their way. Those like us here who don't, well, technically we are probably going to be called 'SOUR GRAPES'. Because we DON'T have such thing in our favoured manufacturer's line-up. And anyway, all our manufacturer cares about nowadays are Gen-Y'ers. (sarcasm mode off now, :P).

I don't know if they can reach 250hp, but Honda has been able to do some things no one thought could be done too.

Perhaps it's a translation error & Honda is only interested in gennys:

Yup at least Honda is at the top of this segment: class leading fuel economy, smoothness, and the quietest in the business!

No sour grapes here, just skepticism. If they develop their 2.0L to the point where it can deliver 250hp with only 7500rpms, I will be phoning up the nearest Subaru dealer to put my name on the list for that car. (It would be even better if they'd put it in sedan form). Even if it's not 2.0L, maybe they have to bump it to 2.2 or something - 250hp, FR, <2900lbs? Sign me up. I already have something like that from Honda, but what I've been waiting anxiously for (for more than 10 years ): has been a fixed roof version with 4 doors.

There are rumors Toyota will offer a sedan based on this chassis to spread out some of the development costs of the BR-Z/FT-86/FR-S. Would likely use the same powertrain which is 'eh IMO.

Regardless, would be really interesting, I'd definitely consider as a DD.

Convertible, saloon, fast model etc have all been mentined by the chief engineer.

You know, it's following exactly the same development pattern that Honda doesn't.
