I say "it's only food" lightly.......as I said, some people will love what others hate???? So again, to some, it's only food. I made a Portobella Mushroom sandwich back in 1992 on Ciabatta bread with ridicco, yellow tomato, smoked Mozzarella and basil pesto mayo served with crisp sweet potato fries. Everyone said, when I took over the restaurant, it would never sell, I sold between 30 to 60 A DAY, proved them wrong........my biggest seller of the 150 people I turned for lunch........When I took the place over, they were serving MAYBE 20 for lunch.........I had a totally radical menu, the papers and magazines LOVED it and the people came in droves......But, to some, it was just food........

Smoking tires..........DUDE, you need to come to Cleveland and hopp in my 65 Chrysler, we can smoke tires as long as you want, I am NEEDING an excuse to lose the Creigers and get 18 inch black inners and polished aluminum outters for my Chrysler coupe........We going to hook up if I come to LA???

As Andrew says where has the best food is all down to personal taste. My town, Calgary, has improved its ethnic food beyond all recognition in the last 20 years. Oh and as far as Indian food is concerned, and I am British so I should know about this.....it's the Bukhara at the Sheraton in Delhi. Kind of a long way to go for a take out..... But for variety, value and service the US beats everywhere else on the planet.

WRONG--never been to either Vancouver or TO, have you Tony? Even in the 70s when my family & I arrived in Canada from HK there was already a noticeable presence of quality Chinese restaurants specializing in Hakka, Szechuan, Shanghai, Macau cuisine, etc in Toronto in addition to the standard HK/Cantonese cuisine. The influx of well heeled and discerning immigrants from Taiwan and the Mainland to both Van & TO since the 90s means the quality and quantity of choices have only gone up even that much more (at least comparable to China's as per my folks, who go back every yr for vacation).

My brother in law loves coming to TO from LA--he says he gets to eat all the foods from his childhood that he can't find in LA. Do you get stinky tofu in LA? It's delicious here.

Funny you should say that... yes, we do get Taiwanese "stinky tofu" in Torrance. My wife recently went to a Taiwanese restaurant and brought some take out for dinner.

It's an interesting texture... ;-)

Her carpool buddy is Taiwanese.

Maybe your brother in law needs to look around some more.

Oh, I should say that I have not been in Toronto but I've been to BC quite a bit.

The place is overrun by Hong Kong expats since the People took over form the UK. So, whenever we go to BC we just do dim sum since it's quite superb up there (yes... we do have superb dim sum in LA too...).

If I want other type of chinese food, we got tons of small holes in the wall all over the Southland. And when I worked at Pasadena and Alhambra half the crew was ethnic Chinese so our lunches were pretty extraordinary for a while until I got used to the breadth of chinese food.

Argentina... ah yes.. Malbec, grilled meat and chimicurri... Someday I want to spend a month in a rental car in Argentina and visit the original Jesuit missions, eat beef and drink good wine.

Indian.. we got lots of it around here in LA too. It's also an extremely varied cuisiine. We have dabbled at making our own. In fact last night we were discussing making a fusion chicken marsala pizza. We could make it using naan as the base.

Andrew... yeah, the portobello sandwiches sound outstanding. I sent you private email. Let me know if/when you come down to LA. Maybe we could get my wife to drive us around Van Ness Blvd.

You funny guy, where did I mention Jeremy Lin is 'Chinese'? What are you reading into our conversation? He's American, not produced by Canada. But I see you've heard of him, lol.

I take it you think no non-asian can judge asian food? Are you trying to be implicitly racist with this statement? I don't care whether you think i'm Asian or not, but seriously, are you trying to be racist here?

I get it that you don't like me or are somehow defensive about chinese food in Toronto or Vancouver (you don't have to be, its quite good). But what's the point of this particular response to me other than underlying racism?

It was a far more interesting discussion than boring old Hondas. I was gonna suggest we abort to the Temple of kung po & take a look back in 2014 to see if there was any interesting car stuff going down.

Unfortunataly, when someone plays the race card, it invariably shows they've lost and ruins the debate for all. Pity.

I thought so too, but it got a bit racist and personal. I don't mind learning something new or interesting (love it actually), but let's not turn it into personal attacks, let alone racism (even if its unintended as such). That deserves a response.

Suffice it for me to say that if/when I head up to Vancouver (possibly in the summer) I wouldn't mind taking recommendations on where to get the great Chinese food from CarPhreakd or any of the other experts.

I can kind of imagine either Jeff or Shaun inching the mouse cursor towards the ban button (and I'm guessing this thread is about to be locked)... but come on...

If I wanted an expert on Latvian food, I would not ask an American what he considered to be a good Latvian place. If I go into a Mexican restaurant and there are no Hispanic folks and only white people there, I'm not eating there. The Toronto example would be a place like Spring Rolls, perhaps the only asian in restaurant in town with no asians in it. Similarly, I don't expect a lot of people to understand what consists of good Chinese, Japanese or Korean food. For a lot of non-asians, asian foods consist of some sauce dubbed "Thai" that has been drizzled over dry pieces of chicken on a salad plate. Or consists of ketchupy sweet and sour sauce over chicken balls on some really bad rice... or sushi from a corner of the fridge in a convenience store. The last time I went to LA, a highly recommended Chinese food joint consisted of a higher celery to meat ratio in my Kongpao chicken than there is in most salads. I've seen better Vietnamese food in 2X2 kilometer square in Washington DC! And something that Americans dub "fusion" food? Eugh...

Also, I'm not making any racist jokes, because I hate everyone EQUALLY. And if you are not up our multicultural Canadian cultural trends, you'd start to realize that everyone in Canada is, as you deemed it, "racist". The reason? Because people from different parts of the world are different. If you can't point out, appreciate and even laugh about the differences for fear of being deemed racist, then you truly live in a homogenous, beige society. Just look at our truly Torontonian ambassador:

Look, if you're so easily offended by me saying that you're probably not asian and therefore likely have no idea what constitutes good asian or Chinese food, then I am very sorry. But it's true =D

Also, Tony, Hong Kong is a port city that used to be held by the Brits, which incidentally means you find some of the best foods from all over Asia (and ASEAN nations, and South asian nations like India and Pakistan). Hong Kong has its own unique foods (like breakfast buns and milk tea), but realize that a lot of "HK" stuff isn't from HK itself. Dim Sum is not really from HK as it is from Guandong province... Man I'm fat.

Our beer may be good in parts, but what passes off as ethnic food in our restaurants and jars is often cynical, processed shit.

And Fusion cuisine is marketing BS. I'd sooner eat a Ford.

Mind you, just because food is truly ethnic doesn't mean it isn't necessatily crap, either!

You can take a horse to water but a pencil must be lead.

No, not offended. I've been called worse than 'non-Asian'. But that was quite a rant by you, even a pic of Russell Peters. Yes, I've been to several of his shows...he's got great audience interaction, highly recommended.

Listen, I have no problem with you. Yes, you make assumptions about me you can't back up. Not sure of your intent (though I can surmise its not to make friends, lol). You literally are words on a screen. Just cuz I respond doesn't mean I'm offended. But you have nothing else to prove, and if you feel you do, maybe that's more on you than me....

I hope you take my advice and get out a little and forget this whole convo. Not a big deal buddy.

CarbonGray Earl,

May I ask what your intentions are here? It seems as if you are drawing people into a discussion of race perception to somehow define who you are to many. If you are a fine person I'd say that's good enough for me without belaboring the point.

It's a genuine question - within a thread stated to be about a car (with fries on the side). ;-)

oh yes, I quite agree with that, and add that I find it greatly interesting if a non-[insert race/nationality here] can be knowledgeable about [insert race/nationality here] culture, let alone food. It is indeed possible...

As for my intention, I can only say that I was answering to assumptions made about myself, regarding my race, my cultural intelligence (if you will), etc. I don't know carphreakd and I have nothing against him, but he did bring up my race or disbelief in me being asian or my experiences with asian food (sweet and sour pork is WAY off the list of things I order). So my intention was to answer, and of course, question him on why he believes that about me and maybe get into his underlying beliefs. He did answer why, so that helps.

At which point, since he doesn't think someone of another race can judge asian food, it made sense why he was responding the way he did. Some sort of internet fight that I don't care for. in a nutshell, that's why I've responded the way I did.

I'll tell you that I've never had anything against Canadians getting good or the greatest ever Chinese food. I'd rather go try some than get into an e-fight about it.

This thread has become absolutely ridiculous! Lets get back to Honda and back on topic please and away from food, race, etc.

Thank you.

Yup, the initial posts were really good and I had a great time reading them. And going back to the original topic, I seriously hope Honda will not make the same mistake again EVER. But if this wake-up call is nothing but air, I just want Honda to cease to exist than continue to watch its slow demise.
