New Cisco DPC3010 Docsis 3.0 cable modem    (Score: 1, Normal) 11-25-2011 21:20

Turns out my old Toshiba DOCSIS modem was crapping out... In the last two weeks it had dropped to less than 1 Mbps downloads... which was excruciating.

A Cox technician came by this AM and diagnosed the problem to the modem.

So I went to the Cox store and got me a new Cisco DPC3010 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem.... WOW.... what a difference... now I'm getting like 15++ Mbps, and this is the base service which guarantees only 5 Mbps.

Stuff downloads very fast now. I can run espn360.com AND Netflix simultaneously to different parts of the house with no problems ( the house is wired for GigE and I have very nice switches... ).

Oh, it turns out that the DPC3010 is not a retail item. The DPC3000 is. By all means, get the former, it has eight channels for download vs. four for the latter. The 3010 will sustain 50Mbps service from Cox ( actually it has the potential to go MUCH higher).

Phew.... I had to eat my words to my wife... Cox was fine, it was our home equipment that failed.

BTW... if you get a DPC 3000/3010 its LAN side IP adress is 192.168.100.1. I can see its public web page and its connection status but I can not log in. My understanding is that its default username/password are cisco/cisco but Cox must have changed that... Oh well...

PS: The EPC3010 is identical to the DPC3010 except that it uses the European signal interface.

No can do.

The modem is running a firmware version for Cox:

DPC3010-v302r12901-110516a-COX

It's designed to lock the modem down once it's provisioned. I've looked into forums and it seems that even if you manage to log in, it always takes you back to the main window:

Oh well, I guess they don't folks to mess with the WAN settings.
