Perhaps this is more of an open letter to Jon Ikeda, but I thought it important to say that I very much appreciate his hard work as chief designer for Acura.
I'm sure that every day he deals with a lot of pressure from a variety of personalities, departments and disciplines as he works diligently to design vehicles that express the brand's image and buyer's aspirations.
As Acura's core value seems to be something of a moving target, he has to function as a sort of "design futurist" shaping products that are current, relevant and have a level of longevity. That's hard. But I'm sure he's more than talented and passionate enough to rise to these challenges.
At TOV we have a powerful forum to express our opinions of the products created by Honda and Acura. Most of us were raised on the two brands, and have a high level of sensitivity, ownership and driving spirit, tuned by a sort of multi-sensorial experience that is uniquely Honda.
Still, I think it's important to remember to criticize in a respectful tone and where it's merited - and always for the love of Honda and the belief in the Power of Dreams. In most cases we do just that - and we do so because our (rational) passions are so high.
I have no doubt that Mr. Ikea, his design team, and Honda designers worldwide have the utmost passion for the Honda Spirit, and through their "nose-down" diligence and sense of stewardship of the brand, they will meet the challenges that are on their desks today and position Honda and Acura for greatness in the future!
