That was supposed to say Dec 2011, of course. The 2011 year shows a slightly different story:
Corolla 240,259
Cruze 231,732
Civic 225,938
Elantra 186,361
Focus 175,717
Sentra 114,991
Mazda3 102,417
Impreza 41,196
Caliber 35,049

It's quite amazing that the Civic (And Corolla) sold this well after all the production difficulties it encountered in 2011 (Tsunami and Thailand Floods).
If you count only the retail sales (vs fleet), the Civic is by far the #1 in that segment.

well there has been some pent up demand, and a sudden large amount of stock availability means good deals. The funny part is those numbers are closer than the Iowa Caucus results. I bet Toyota is fuming over that loss by 1 car.

I thought the great Elantra and Focus would be killing the Civic by now... nahh

Yeah... it shows that despite:
- worst ever production woes all over the year (rather well documented in this TOV thread), and
- over-hyped media criticism (perfectly well documented in a miriad of TOV threads since spring)
the Civic still likely to have led the retail market in 2011.
Now on to 2012 with finally some supplies coming down the line (fingers crossed for no fresh disasters anywhere...)

I would have thought Corolla would be lower since it's on the 8th model year. But I guess this segment buys based on ancient reputation instead of merits.

That's what I thought, too, but recalculating...
recalculating...it's 101 cars on closer inspection.
Civic 21,110
Corolla 21,009
Cheers.

Where do you find the break down of retail VS fleet?

I just don't understand why the Corolla sells so well. To me it is thoroughly outclassed by Civic, Elantra, and Impreza.

Maybe it's the 4 speed automatic?

No way! It still has a 4AT!?! ...
So this 4AT, non direct injected, 34mpg hwy car beats both Focus and Elantra huh?
I wonder where now are all those Hyundai trolls saying that the Elantra was going to walk all over this segment.

Eventually you guys will figure out that things like 6ATs, independent rear suspensions, power ratings, DI...whatever...that stuff doesn't mean anything to a LOT of people. People buy the car they like, and yeah that decision is, in part, based upon the things I listed above but it isn't directly based upon those things. Maybe for you it is, and that's totally fine, but don't question the intelligence of people for buying the car that they wanted. Unless they buy a 200 or something.

I must admit, there are a lot of cars I despise, yet I can see why people buy them. They're just not for me.
But then there are others (like the Corolla) that I just don't get. They're clearly for people who want something reliable like a fridge, but I just cannot see why they choose THAT fridge...reputation beats reality, I guess.

If memory serves, Toyota delayed the introduction of the current gen of Corolla to make some changes for it to be more competitive with existing and upcoming designs (Mazda3 particularly at the time as well as Civic to some extent).
So if what we're seeing is the "more competitive" version, the mind reels to think what the "less competitive" version was like...
Of course, Honda is now in the same boat to some degree with the uninspired (to be charitable) Civic redesign. As a longtime Accord owner, I can only hope that the design objective was to meet and exceed the improved competition with the upcoming Accord redesign. Even Honda's reputation may not be able to withstand the consequences if the Accord redesign is as poorly received as was the Civic's.

At lower price points especially (name of the game in this segment), the Corolla checks off many more feature boxes than the Civic. Toyota seems to have figured out what people want in an appliance, and now Hyundai is following suit.
Go to Toyota.com and compare a Civic DX base and a Corolla base, and then do the same on Honda.com. Pay attention to the list at each site, especially the "advantages", and tell me if you see what I see.
