Double-DIN (Civic) Navi system joystick failure

A few months ago I noticed the joystick on my '08 Civic Si's navi was misbehaving. Now it barely works. This is really disappointing as my warranty aged out months ago, but my car only has about 25000 miles on it. I've heard the dealer will charge you around $450 to have it fixed when it's out of warranty.
This double-DIN unit (or a very similar design) has been used widely across the range in everything from the Insight, Fit, CR-Z, Civic and CR-V, so I'm wondering how common this failure is and if there's any reasonable DIY fix available for somebody who's willing to try.
