A few months ago I noticed the joystick on my '08 Civic Si's navi was misbehaving. Now it barely works. This is really disappointing as my warranty aged out months ago, but my car only has about 25000 miles on it. I've heard the dealer will charge you around $450 to have it fixed when it's out of warranty.
This double-DIN unit (or a very similar design) has been used widely across the range in everything from the Insight, Fit, CR-Z, Civic and CR-V, so I'm wondering how common this failure is and if there's any reasonable DIY fix available for somebody who's willing to try.

Jeff,
And of course Honda being what it is now they will turn a blind eye to a loyal Honda customer and influential member of the media and tell you to go pound sand. This example goes back to your point about worrying about keeping your Oddy around much longer because of what may happen and for the same reason I am getting rid of my '04TL because I am creeping up on 100k miles and I am afraid of what awaits me after already replacing a cracked dash, power steering rack, and a power window motor and channel.
With Honda, major (expensive) problems never seemed to happen after the warranty expired and if so you could expect some assistance from the factory but not anymore.

same thing happened to mine on my 07 SI about a year ago. i tried searching here and other forums about the issue but couldn't find anything.
i used the joystick the most for moving the map around so i could see areas not in view- which i did quite often.
now i just use google maps on my iphone if i need to see streets...ill have the navi and the iphone going.
bad part is if i don't have service on my phone then i'm sol.

about the reliability - ive got 150k on my si and it has never once been to the dealer. i do all the regular maintenance myself.
the only things that have gone bad were the idler pulley which i replaced myself for about $15 and the drivers side visor finally went at about 135k. oh, and the joystick.
3 little things in 150k mi.
not bad.
